White Oak Alpacas

Mock Show

Home

We are fast approaching the first alpaca show of the season. Here at White Oak Alpacas we added a lot of extras to our training this year intended to better prepare a field of champions for what they will experience in the show environment. The usual halter and lead training has been conducted all winter. But since the new year we have had two Saturday let’s pretend show days. About ten ranchers new and old, that are associated with White Oak, came and participated in the fun.

We started by putting a show class together in a typical pen. Owners haltered and practiced walking, and yes of course waiting. We included trailer loading and unloading. With all the commotion of people and alpacas it was fun to see the animals settling into acceptance that this was kind of a neat diversion from hay and poop.

We then set up our candidates for the show ring environment. They all got the taste and feel of what it will be like for them on show day. Randy practiced as ring steward helping Karin as judge.

Then we all know what it is like to take our winners to the photographer. What is it with bright lights and standing still for a few quick clicks? So we set up our ranch display as a lighted background and Randy took photographs of all the contestants. We hope this will make taking those winning ribbon photos easier on every one.

There will always be the surprises when show season arrives. But at least these rookies have seen what is typical and may be just a bit more prepared. After all we want them to have fun too. See you all at the Shows.
